Tuareg wooden bowl
Aylal wooden bowl –Tuareg– (Agadez Region, Niger)
The sad story of the Ténéré tree, an acacia whose roots must have reached the center of the Earth and which was the only tree within 500 km, offers us an approximate idea of how rare and valuable wood is in the country of thirst.
Wood is, as we say, a scarce commodity that desert people do not want (or cannot) do without. For example, the pikes in their tents are made of wood, the pulleys that allow them to draw water from the wells are made of wood, and the toron are made of wood, those trunks that protrude from the walls and minarets of their mosques and that serve as steps to climb and repair them.
The Aylal, that carved wooden bowl that women use in a thousand tasks and chores, is also made of wood and its continued use always ends up deteriorating and breaking it. In another place the destination of the broken bowl would be the garbage can, but in the desert it must be repaired: it is the wabisabi philosophy taken to the extreme.
The piece we show (one of the many we have in Black Market) is one of those bowls broken a thousand times and repaired as many times with metal strips and staples. The outside of the bowl is decorated with geometric engravings in the Tuareg style.
