Kneeling Nkisi
Nkisi Vili kneeling (Cabinda Region, Angola)
Among the different peoples that were once part of the ancient Kongo kingdom, a Nkisi is a spirit or, by affinity, any object occupied by a spirit. In this case the Nkisi becomes a container that a Nganga master (healer or fortune teller) will be in charge of filling (for example, with the earth or the root of a plant grown on the grave of an important person), so that later he can invoke the captured spirit and obtain a remedy for people's problems and illnesses.
In theory the Nkisi can have any form, but anthropomorphic fetishes are the most used and efficient. If the figure is shown standing with a threatening attitude (Npezo) the spirit will be aggressive and vengeful; If, on the other hand, the fetish is shown kneeling and calm (Namonanga), the ancestral spirit will be kind and will be invoked to bring happiness to the requester.
Sometimes the master will invoke the spirit of the Nkisi by hammering a nail into it and, after years of use, the fetish will end up turning into a kind of pincushion (Nkondi); Other times, however, a blow to the back will be enough to activate the Nkisi's magic.
The Nkisi that we now offer you comes from the Cabinda region and corresponds to a carved wooden figure of a kneeling woman. Her penetrating gaze indicates that the spirit can see beyond the sensible world and protect whoever invokes it from witchcraft and black magic. Deterioration of the feet, buttocks and base indicates prolonged use of it.
This Nkisi was part of the Bentley collection and is at least seventy years old.
