Hausa koranik Ayuba, Kano (Nigeria)
Allo Hausa of Maradi (Zinder District, Niger)
The Allo is that table on which adolescent memorizers write the verses of the Koran over and over again until they end up retaining them. However, in the madrassas of Maradi or Katsina the teacher does not limit himself to dictating over and over again the revelations made to the Prophet, because the Islam practiced in the region is strongly influenced by the animist Maguzawa tradition in which the Allo It ends up becoming an instrument of popular magic and a door that connects the physical world with that of spirits.
For this reason, in addition to verses, the Allo also represents zodiacal symbols, geometric figures, animist marks or even drawings of animals in a heterodox and syncretic mix of Judeo-Islamic, Hausa or even Yoruba elements. In this way, the talibe table ends up becoming a white magic platform in which ancestral African energy is enhanced by Islamic mechanisms or by magic squares from the East.
The Allo that we show in Black Market presents the typical shape of the Hausa Quranic tablet: a relatively wide writing surface, a handle in the shape of a crescent moon and two small "legs" that are reminiscent of the ancient Maguzawa fetishes destroyed during the Fulani Jihad of Usman Dan Fodio. On both sides of the table, two simple third-order magic squares have been drawn in ink in which the esoteric symbols have been replaced by numbers; the squares are accompanied by protective and beneficial animals (two dab lizards) or enigmatic animals (the jackal); Beneath everything, you can sense the verses that once covered the Allo and that, washed with water, generated a black liquid capable of curing any illness (or so the teacher claims, who sells it at a good price).
