Bamun pearl stool (Northwest region, Cameroon)
The massive arrival of trade beads to the ports of the Gulf of Guinea gave rise to an industry aimed at the decoration of headdresses, dresses, fetishes and ritual stools. The recipients of such works of art were, almost always, the ruling classes of the mouth and grasslands of Cameroon. Without going any further, Nsa'ngu, king of the Bamun, commissioned a majestic wooden throne completely covered in glass beads in the mid-19th century. Shortly after that king decided to give pearl stools to his most loyal servants, although he always took care that these seats were small, circular and devoid of any human or animal figure, so that they could never compete with the beauty of his throne.
The beads then used by Bamun artisans were irregular and came from France or the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The Kuo Koko seat that we offer at Black Market is a monoxyl stool with a circular base and seat, joined by five columns. Most of the surface has been covered with cotton canvas on which rows of small and irregular black and white "Father" type beads are arranged, probably made in France.
