While some antique dealers and collectors consider it a cane, a puppet or even a toy aardvark, the Bambara people recognize this little wooden horse as a So Koredugaw, the friendly "tool" that the masked Nené Sotigi uses to make fun of anyone attending the initiation ceremonies of the Koré and Ntomo collectives.
No one is safe from his taunts, whether you are a beginner, a Koré teacher or a village chief, because the masked "rider" will end up teasing everyone by following the fun rules of sinankunya, that healthy and cathartic African practice that It makes laughter an infallible tool for coexistence (alliance de plésanterie or joking relationship is usually called by ethnologists; “compadreo” we prefer to call it in Black Market).
The one we have at Black Market has the shape of a robust wooden staff, with a horse's head whose face, bridles and some parts of the neck have been covered with sheets of scratched and nailed brass. A narrow, undulating band of the same material is aligned over the head, while the neck has a mane of five strands. The animal's eyes have been made with nailed calamine sheet metal and the reins are made of braided hemp. A wooden chair is placed in the middle of the staff.
