The boli are sacred figures of the Bamana people in Mali and, as such, central figures of secret societies. Instead of being carved, a boli is constructed and shaped from materials such as wood, soil, clay, bone, chewed kola nuts, sacrificial blood, urine, honey, beer, bark, and other substances. The mass has a heavy, rounded shape that can sometimes resemble an animal or human, but can also remain unidentifiable. The indefinite shapes of the boli imply a mystery that only the initiated can penetrate. In Mandingo religions, a boli is an object that is said to be "charged", meaning that due to its magic it is capable of doing extraordinary things, such as causing death, telling the future, taking possession of someone, etc. It is considered a living being and contains inside a nucleus that can be a stone, a metal or any other material. This core or "grain" symbolizes vital energy. The more blood the boli receives, the more "charged" it will be with nyama (life force).
