Babanki crest
Bamileké elephant crest (Northwest Region, Cameroon)
The elephant is the animal that symbolizes King Bamileké because he is capable of hitting his enemies with brute force... And it is not a metaphor because, apparently, the sovereign can transform at will into one of them to leave his bamboo palace. and cross the prairies and punish disloyalty with his own hands. To achieve this he only needs to wear a mask or a crest with the effigy of the proboscidean.
Until the second half of the 19th century, elephant masks and crests were carved in wood and decorated with seashells or metal plates. But, since in northern Bohemia they managed to mechanize the production of beads and made their production cheaper, Bamileké artisans began to cover them with glass beads from central Europe until they turned them into multicolored objects.
The crest that we presented at Black Market was part of the Bentley collection and was made before 1950. It consists of a carved wooden base on which lines of gray, blue and red glass beads of 2 mm in diameter have been arranged, elaborately following the Prosser technique, most likely, in northern Bohemia. The crest is completed with a woven raffia platform so that it can rest on the forehead of the masked person.
