Gun Voodoo ceremonial vessels (Altiplano region, Togo)

For an Ewé or a Fon, ceremonial vessels have a purely liturgical use and are used to store all those herbs, ashes or amulets that contain the spirits that govern the Earth. These are two-piece vessels (base and lid), modeled with red clay covered with kaolin engalba.
The base is always hemispherical, multipurpose and lacks decoration. The lid, on the other hand, shows some very rough hand-modelled religious motif, which may represent a vodún or a son of Mawu, the creator goddess. The most represented and common images are that of Legba (a vodun with a large penis), that of Mama Wata (a mermaid accompanied by a snake), that of Dan (the snake and androgynous son of Mawu) or the spider Anansi (a spirit recently incorporated into the Gun Vodún pantheon from the west). At Black Market we have all of them and some more.
