Saro Baulé, like the Sakalava cloth of Madagascar, the Danfani of the Mosi or the Llengos cloth of Mallorca, is made using reserve dyeing techniques applied to the warp, the weft or both types of thread; they call it Ikat in Indonesia.
Like other African cloths, Saro looms are very small; therefore they generate narrow bands that are sewn together until they reach the appropriate size.
In ancient times, Saro was reserved for kings, princes and other distinguished figures and, according to Akán tradition, its designs and patterns reflect the pain of Queen Aura Pokú after the sacrifice of her first-born son on the banks of the Komoé River.
