Thrones are made of many components and materials, but the most obvious and heavy are always vanity and grandeur. After all, what a chief always wants is for his subjects not to take him lightly. Each one then puts it together as he can: if you have gold, you make it out of gold (like the Ashanti); if you like colours, you fill it with beads from Europe (as happens among the Bamileké); and if your forests are still magnificent, you find a good craftsman to make it out of wood (this is the most common case among the Baulé).
Of course, the Baulé craftsman will do with all that wood what he already knows how to do and will choose to enlarge one of those "à palabre" chairs on which the village gossips usually relax after a hard day with a pestle and mortar, to fill it with spirals, columns and carved details.
