Mossi door carved with ancestors (Yassoré province, Burkina Faso)

The Dogons are not the only ones who have the custom of carving their doors in West Africa: it is also done by (among others) the Mossi people in some villages in central Burkina Faso. Their bas-reliefs usually represent schematized figures of ancestors or "Biga" fertility dolls.
The door that we present on this occasion is made up of four planks secured by two pins fixed with metal strips. Three ancestors have been sculpted on each table, alternating men and women with the characteristic scarification of the Mossi. The latch is simple and made of wood.
