Dogon window shutter with three ancestors (Mopti region, Mali)

The men's barns, with a quadrangular floor plan, a peaked roof and somewhat larger than those for women, usually come decorated with women's breasts on their mud walls and doors and windows, as a sign of respect and a desire for fertility.
The shutter that accompanies this text is made up of two very unequal boards joined by two pins fixed with metal strips. The relief presents a total of 27 breasts: 16 of them are aligned, from top to bottom, in the right half of the porthole, while the other 11 are grouped, together with an androgynous ancestor, in its lower left quadrant. Two other androgynous ancestors complete the relief.
