Cloth-coin Kuba (R.D. Congo)
Originating from the Kuba region of DR Congo, these fabrics are hand-woven from raffia, which comes from the leaf of a palm tree. Kuba weavers use a variety of techniques, including flat weaving, embroidery and patching, to create intricate geometric patterns and abstract designs. Within the Kuba community they have been used as clothing, blankets, curtains, tapestries and as symbols of status and wealth, as well as as currency.
