Offering cynocephalus Aboya – Baulé – (Gbêkê region, Ivory Coast)
The image of the cynocephalus (mythological character with the head of a real animal) or Aboya baulé is the receptacle of a wild spirit that lives in the forest and whose presence is essential in the trance divination cult. Aboya is a being who accepts not having been carved seeking the perfection and finesse of the usual canons and who prefers to present the "patina of sacrifice" generated by the impact of all those eggs crashed on his head or the blood of the chickens sacrificed during decades.
His face lacks scarifications, his eyes are bulging, his snout is elongated, his back is arched, his buttocks have calluses and his half-flexed knees show his simian character; On the contrary, a simple loincloth and the offering plate that must contain the head of the sacrificed rooster give it a certain human character. Unlike other Baulés carvings, the Aboya remains hidden in some hiding place in the forest far from the village.
