Meskel (Cross) Coptic Ethiopia
Legend has it that Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, dreamed that the smoke from a bonfire guided her to the place where the real cross where Christ had been executed was hidden. After traveling to the place and finding it, Helena gave a piece of the Cross to all the churches, including the Ethiopian church, where its powerful light undressed the people. That was why they decided to bury the relic at the foot of the Gishen Mariam monastery. Converted to Christianity since the 4th century, Ethiopia displays Meskel crosses on altars and processions.
