Bambara Maternity Gwandansu (Segou Province, Mali)

Known to collectors and pirates as the Bambara Queen, this maternity carved in Mali by an anonymous Bambara artist is a classic among classics. It is a medium to large carving exhibited by initiated members of the Jo society (society of Good) in protective maternity rituals known as Gwan.
The carving represents a powerful woman (her hairstyle, bracelets and wristbands betray her high rank), endowed with an expression full of serenity and tenderness towards the child she holds in her arms. Her full breasts and proud attitude remind the participant in the Gwan of the importance of motherhood in maintaining order and social cohesion.
