For centuries the Akan confederation of the Ashanti maintained its hegemony in the southern half of what is now Ghana thanks to trade, mining and maintaining a highly structured and well-armed state. Power and its maintenance were essential, and the leopard was its fiercest symbol.
The image of the leopard always appears associated with the most powerful castes, whether as part of stools, on the handles and blades of the fearsome Afen swords or as altar figures cast in brass or bronze.
The leopard we present has been modeled with red clay, covered with black clay from Lake Bosumtwi (mixed with soot) and hardened in the same kilns in which glass beads are made south of Kumasi.
