Kente of the Ewé (Lomé, Togo)

Someone pronounces the word Kente and we all think of the king of the Ashanti stuffed into a three-meter piece made in Kumasi... And yet the Ewé of Togo were already weaving it in their own way a century before, to sell it to the merchants of the Dutch West India Company.
They say that the Kente of the Ewé is stronger and simpler in its designs than that made in Kumasi and its surroundings, but it coincides with it in that the ends of the bands maintain a finer and golden pattern that the weavers call Nwotoá or House of the Snail.
The one we offer on this occasion is a large piece that a large man could wear as a toga. It is made up of twenty 9.5 cm bands woven with a repetitive pattern of transverse lines of black, white, yellow, red and green (the combination of green/red/green refers to the colors of the traditional Ewé flag). The Casa del Caracol combines, in a checkered layout, squares with the listed colors and squares with a golden punctual design.

Length: 365 cm; Width: 190 cm.
