Ewald Serra enamel
You can decorate your favorite place with a colorful work by a prestigious artist.
The story of Ewald Serra (Montevideo, 1934) is that of a man who has been accompanied by art since his adolescence, drawing on it to overcome the difficulties of life. Born in Uruguay, he moved to Chile after marrying his wife and in 1973 he had to go into exile in Germany to escape the Pinochet dictatorship, abandoning his degree in fire arts halfway through. “In Germany I worked as a gardener so as not to have to live on social assistance, during that time I suffered a lot,” he recalls emotionally. “Today, my Mallorcan town is my neighborhood, Pere Garau, with which I have a strong relationship of belonging,” he adds.
His enamel works (a technique obtained by fusing powdered glass with a substrate) radiate abundant reminiscences of the expressionism of Pollock and Klee in its primitivist essence.
They represent a direct journey to childhood, a moment of happiness and freedom in creating for the author. This is where his enamels come from, simple and spontaneous in the material but enormously expressive. He claims that children are one of his sources of inspiration since “it fills me with joy to see them crossing the street when they go to school in my neighborhood holding hands, Chinese children, colored children, etc. and it reminds me of the purity of childhood where racism has no place, because the children do not know how to write yet.” (Diario de Mallorca, July 7, 2021)
