Iridescent black faceted beads from Bohemia
Iridescent faceted bead necklace –Bohemia– (origin: Dakar, Senegal)
When in 1840 the brothers Richard and Thomas Prosser devised that cold glass paste that can be molded under pressure before being fired, a period began that forever changed the world of trade accounts. Nothing was the same from then on, because with the Prosser technique also came mechanization that lowered costs and made glass more affordable.
In northern Bohemia they understood this very early and, after the middle of the 19th century, they adopted and perfected the Prosser techniques for their own benefit. From then on, Bohemian beads, of very varied shapes and colors, assaulted African markets.
The necklace we offer on this occasion is a string of 55 almost spherical and faceted dark semi-transparent glass beads made in northern Bohemia in the mid-20th century. The diameter of these beads varies between 16 mm for the largest ones and 9 mm for the smallest ones.
