Yoruba jingle bell bronze beads (Nigeria)
Yoruba Brass Bell Necklace (Ogun State, Nigeria)
Long before the Portuguese showed their sharp mustaches over the Gulf of Guinea, the local people already controlled the casting of bronze and brass with efficiency and good taste. I could now refer, for example, to the impressive bronze portrait of Obalufón, the mythical proto-Yoruba ruler of the Ilé Ife kingdom, but instead I will talk to you about the much more humble brass beads exquisitely crafted to later be worn by the most elegant collars in the place: biconos, leatherbacks, but, above all, those Yoruba bells made to attract the attention of the living and ancestors.
At Black Market we offer you an impressive necklace made with more than 400 Yoruba bells, cast one by one following the ancestral lost wax technique and threaded on a 90 cm cotton thread. Not even the coldest ancestor will remain indifferent.
