Mud cloth
You can use it in many ways: to make a quilt, a curtain, cover a sofa, make cushions, bags, a tapestry, a picnic or beach blanket, make clothes, upholster chairs or armchairs...
In the Bambara language, the words "bogo lan" mean "made of mud" and are used to identify a traditional cloth that is darkened with fermented clay.
Before that, the men and women of Mali must plant and harvest the cotton that will later be spun by the women of the village and woven into narrow strips no more than 15 cm wide by the itinerant weavers. Then, the strips are sewn together until a canvas is obtained that must be cooked and macerated for hours with the bark of various local shrubs.
Once the desired shades of ochre, brown or yellow have been obtained, the cloth will be impregnated with mud in those areas that should look black, justifying, in passing, its name: bogolan.
Although there are fashions and certain regional variations, the base colour and pattern of each bogolan will depend largely on its final use: dark brown tones with simple designs for the hunter, intense black with geometric designs for the marriageable woman, pure white decorated with black or reddish figures for women in labour... Or a mixture of all of them simply for the pleasure of the eyes. Enjoy.
