The old African proverb that a man without a stool is a man without dignity was taken to the extreme by the Akan, and at the end of the 17th century, the Asantene Osei Tutu, the first king of the Ashanti dynasty, forced his subjects to bow down before his Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of his kingdom.
The Baulé, another Akan people, did not go that far, but they still attached considerable importance to the place where the backsides of kings and other figures should rest. That is why they carved (and continue to carve) chairs and stools full of symbols and totemic animals.
One of these animals is the leopard, the powerful spirit of the forest on which any chief sees his authority redoubled.
